CIVIC PROJECTS
For decades generations of Rusticus members have cared for two local gardens in our community.
For more than forty years, we have lovingly tended to the Terrace Garden at the John Jay Homestead State Historic Site. And, for nearly fifty years, Civic Gardens committee members and Rusticus Provisionals (new members) have devotedly managed the garden in front of the Bedford Village Library.
In early spring we awaken the gardens, removing debris, cleaning plants and adding new native plants where needed. Throughout the spring, summer and fall, we weed, eliminate invasive plants, water if necessary, check health, and remediate issues if pathology dictates. And in late fall we put the gardens to slumber cleaning out any diseased foliage and preparing the gardens for winter. Our Civic Gardens Committee stays abreast of local phenology, educational newsletters and scouting reports detailing pest and disease activity and together with other committees shares invaluable input into the evolution of our gardens.
